Horrible choices

1980s: two brothers reunite after 60 years. One of them lived in Kyiv, the other in a kibbutz.
They actually were from a family with four children, all living in Ukraine. Then in 1920 the family boarded the steamer departing to the USA. But two of their children missed the boat. Someone took a pity upon them, and gave a roof and a job. Then WWII, the older brother did not survive. Then the Cold War and Iron Curtain.
Somehow in the 70s they found each other, and wrote letters.
I wonder how people found each other in those days without internets.
And how an 11-year-old can miss a boat...
